Why I Reported a Social Platform for Illegal Surveillance—and How You Can Too

In the age of personalized content and algorithm-driven feeds, many people don’t realize how far some platforms are willing to go to retain users, harvest data, and influence behavior.

I never expected to be one of those people. But over time, what started as a digital inconvenience turned into something far more serious unauthorized surveillance, psychological coercion, and cross-platform manipulation.

This week, I filed a formal consumer protection complaint with the Office of the Attorney General in my state.

Here’s why I did it and how you can too if you’re experiencing anything remotely similar.

What Pushed Me to Act

What I experienced went far beyond simple privacy concerns. It involved:

Surveillance-like behavior on both my personal and work devices

Emotionally manipulated content feeds designed to provoke shame, fear, or distress

Scam calls, phishing emails, and suspicious texts tied to my online activity

A pattern of platform sabotage meant to steer me back to one specific app

Racially targeted microaggressions and emotional baiting

I had already issued a formal cease and desist notice. The behavior not only continued. It escalated.

That’s when I realized: this wasn’t just unethical. It was likely illegal.

Why I’m Not Naming the Company (Yet)

In this post, I’ve chosen not to name the company directly.

This isn’t to protect them. It’s to protect the integrity of the legal process. My goal is to help readers recognize the pattern, not just the platform. If this is happening to me, it could be happening to others under different names and interfaces.

What to Do If You’re Experiencing Something Similar

If you’ve noticed:

Digital harassment or persistent stalking

Curated emotional content that seems too well-timed or invasive

Phishing attempts or scam communication following your online behavior

Racially targeted messages or emotionally manipulative fake profiles

You may be experiencing more than just “bad luck.” It could be part of a system designed to retain, bait, and destabilize.

How to File a Consumer Complaint

You can take legal action by filing a consumer protection complaint with your state Attorney General. Here's how:

1. Visit your state’s Attorney General website
Look for “Submit a Consumer Complaint” or “File a Privacy Violation.”

2. Describe the pattern
Use a timeline, mention suspicious behavior, and explain how it affects your emotional or digital well-being.

3. Focus on the violations
Mention issues like unauthorized surveillance, coercion, privacy breaches, and behavioral manipulation.

4. Be specific about your resolution
I requested that all illegal engagement, retention tactics, and surveillance be stopped in full.

You don’t need to submit all your screenshots at once. Your story alone could be enough to trigger an investigation.

Final Thoughts

No platform ,no matter how powerful, has the right to monitor, manipulate, or retaliate against you for leaving.

If your experience feels too calculated, too personal, or too repetitive, you’re not imagining it. These aren’t random glitches. They’re engineered traps.

You have legal rights.
And the moment you take them seriously, the balance of power begins to shift.
